Tragedy will, unfortunately, affect us at some point in our lives. The time will be different for everyone, but it is most important to deal with the tragedy emotionally. Marjane, the central character in Persepolis, is able to overcome a tragedy in her home country. She uses love, courage and fear to battle a horrible situation. In Iran, fear was used by government to control others. Some gave into the fear, but others used courage to defeat it. Marjane feared many things: her family members getting hurt, her uncle being recaptured, and her personal safety...

Donnie Darko. An extremely unique movie character. Plagued by emotional problems, he is labeled as a schizophrenic. However, in reality, he is suffering from a severe case of fear. The fear to die alone. He believes that crime and disorder will solve his fear, but the only true way to solve fears is to confront them. In Donnie’s case, it was a true act of love that freed him of his greatest fear. Donnie was a very smart teenager: Academically, philosophically, and theologically. However, he severely lagged behind socially. Donnie often insulted others whom...

The Samurai. A group of powerful warriors that existed in Japan until the late 1800’s. In The Last Samurai, we learn about the positive characteristics of a Samurai. Respect for all of those you meet, even those who have wronged you. Compassion is an emotion which the Samurai humbly express. Finally, perhaps the most important trait of the Samurai, is discipline. As Captain Algren mentions in the film: “The Samurai are the most disciplined people I have ever met”. Without great discipline and perseverance, the Samurai would not have accomplished...

The movie Neverwas is based on the concept of a king protecting his kingdom. A children’s author writes a novel about a delusional man, out of love for his son. His entire story was based on what this delusional ‘king’ told him, and that made it a truly special novel. Some themes presented in the movie are making others feel special, no matter how strange they may seem; and doing things out of love. Neverwas demonstrates many good qualities that we should possess. T.L. Pierson was a great writer. Sending letters was a standard of communication...

The character of Major Payne is very reserved emotionally. This is due to his expansive military background. When you are reserved, other people will have a tendency to dislike you. However, Payne used other methods to gain the respect, and ultimately, the love from his young cadets. Major Payne always tried to look tough in front of others (and himself). When Tiger tried to hug him, he felt very awkward. Payne was so concerned with his ‘tough guy’ military image, that is almost drove him away from his students; who he loved. Although Payne still...
